Japan's GDP slide with declining consumption may lead to a lowering of the Japanese economic outlook, says Long Hanhua Wang, economist for RBS Securities Japan. "Domestic consumption is falling," he says; "given consumption had been supporting the economy, we need to lower the economic outlook down the road." Japan's GDP contracted a price-adjusted 3.5% on-quarter in annualized terms in the July-September quarter. Private consumption declined 0.5% on quarter. "Uncertainty remains over the global economic outlook," he says; "exports are likely to remain weak on the back of political disputes between China and Japan. External demand will likely recover slower than previously thought."
